Tree removal certificate
in Sorel-Tracy

Tree cutting permit. City of Sorel-Tracy

Nowadays, most citizens are aware of the importance of the well-being of trees and the many benefits they bring to our lives. However, various situations may require the removal of trees. How can we intervene in a fair manner when the interests of trees and those of citizens come into conflict? It is to prevent and control such situations that municipal by-laws intervene.

Our page provides information on tree cutting and obtaining a permit for the City of Sorel-Tracy. It is essential that you obtain your definitive information from official sources: directly from the City of Sorel-Tracy or by reading the zoning by-law. Please note that the official version of the zoning by-law is not the one available on the City of Sorel-Tracy's Web site, but the one you can obtain at the City Clerk's Office: greffe@vdst.qc.ca.

Certificate of authorization for felling

Felling of an ash tree by Emondage Sorel-Tracy in the City of Sorel-Tracy.
A certificate of authorization is required to cut down a tree. The request is made to the Planning and Urban Development Department (see contact information at the end of this page). Permit applications can be made online on the City of Sorel-Tracy's website. Please note that in certain circumstances, processing times may be longer than usual. Make sure you apply on time.

Acceptable reasons for cutting down a tree

A tree that is dead or suffering from an incurable disease, an ash tree (between October 1st and March 15th, as the insect is in its overwintering and larval stages) or any tree that is dangerous to the health or safety of citizens or that constitutes a nuisance to property may normally be felled. In the case of a tree that presents a danger, the tree must be cut down without delay if no other measures can be taken to avoid it.

Nuisance refers to cases where a tree damages or poses a threat to a property or where it prevents authorized work or the installation of public utility constructions, equipment and infrastructure. In these cases, the tree must be replaced, sometimes by one, sometimes by two trees. In this case, the specimen must be at least 0.5 metres tall for a deciduous tree and 3 metres tall for a coniferous tree. Protective measures (including for mature trees) and specific restrictions also apply in areas near shorelines, lakes and streams, or in wooded or agricultural areas. Refer to the by-law for details.

The regulation also affects the disposal of residue from ash tree felling. When the residue is no larger than 20 cm, it can be chipped immediately on site. The resulting chips must not exceed 2.5 cm on at least two sides. You must then send them within the next few days to an authorized site, such as the Ecocentre. Other disposal methods are also possible. Residues that exceed 20 cm must be kept or processed on site between March 15 and October 1 and sent to an authorized site, such as the Ecocentre, as of October 1.

A permit is not normally issued for simple inconveniences. For example, if you find that falling fruit, prominent roots, shade or pollen bother you, such reasons are not admissible.
